International Body Piercing Day, celebrated annually on June 28, was founded to celebrate the birthday of Jim Ward, who opened the first professional piercing studio in 1978.
The holiday marks the birthday of Ward, who was born June 28, 1941, and founded Gauntlet, which was said to be the world’s first professional piercing studio when it opened in California in 1978. Ward is credited with developing many of the piercing techniques in use today — especially those dealing with sensitive areas of the body.
International Body Piercing Day was founded by a friend of Ward as a holiday to celebrate the piercing pioneer’s birthday and promote piercing education and safety standards for the industry.
Other holidays and observances for June 28, 2022, include CAPS LOCK Day, Insurance Awareness Day, International Lightning Safety Day, National Ceviche Day, National Columnists Day, National Tapioca Day, Operation Red Wings Observance, Paul Bunyan Day and Tao Day.
